Character: the Key to Leadership

LEADERSHIP Series: Fear God & Know Happiness In Leading

Proverbs 28:14 (NIV) Blessed is the man who always fears the LORD, but he who hardens his heart falls into trouble.

Leviticus 25:17 (NIV) Do not take advantage of each other, but fear your God. I am the LORD your God.

Job 28:28 (NIV) And he said to man, 'The fear of the Lord—that is wisdom, and to shun evil is understanding.' "

Acts 9:31 (NIV) Then the church throughout Judea, Galilee and Samaria enjoyed a time of peace. It was strengthened; and encouraged by the Holy Spirit, it grew in numbers, living in the fear of the Lord.

2 Corinthians 5:11 (NIV) Since, then, we know what it is to fear the Lord, we try to persuade men. What we are is plain to God, and I hope it is also plain to your conscience.

Integrity comes from the root word that means wholeness or completeness. Without a personal relationship with the Lord God, a human is incomplete. For the Christian Leader, their integrity correlates well with their “fear of the Lord.”

Integrity drives all the decisions that develop a servant’s heart. Humans begin life serving self. We practice that art – faithfully – through our childhood. Only when we are made whole will a servant’s heart emerge that is not the product of some self-taught, manufactured attitude: it is the consequence of true belief - belief with eternal consequences.

Integrity results in our care for all the resources we have at our disposal and is born from our realization that our Creator owns everything – every thing – and we are called to be stewards of that which is owned by the One who created it all.

DISCUSSION GUIDE

1. Discuss the difference between how the world views integrity, servant’s heart and stewardship with how the Christian Worldview develops those attributes.

2. Using the verses provided (over 150 references to “fear of the Lord”) discuss how they shape your understanding of this blog and your behavior at work.

3. Probe deeply into the comment from Job 28:28 – what is really being said in this verse? How does it apply to leading? What difference should it make in your intention, your behavior and the impact you have to those around you?
