Leadership is Not Presumptuous

LEADERSHIP Series: Authentic Self-promotion

Proverbs 25: 6-7 (MSG) Don't work yourself into the spotlight; don't push your way into the place of prominence. It's better to be promoted to a place of honor than face humiliation by being demoted.

Luke 14:8-10 (AMP) When you are invited by anyone to a marriage feast, do not recline on the chief seat [in the place of honor], lest a more distinguished person than you has been invited by him, and he who invited both of you will come to you and say, Let this man have the place [you have taken]. Then, with humiliation and a guilty sense of impropriety, you will begin to take the lowest place. But when you are invited, go and recline in the lowest place, so that when your host comes in, he may say to you, Friend, go up higher! Then you will be honored in the presence of all who sit [at table] with you.

Matt 23:12 (AMP) Whoever exalts himself [with haughtiness and empty pride] shall be humbled (brought low), and whoever humbles himself [whoever has a modest opinion of himself and behaves accordingly] shall be raised to honor.

Discussion Guide

1. For the Christ-centered, small business person, authentic self-promotion must be practiced within the context of personal values. What are your core values? Discuss them in the context of your business. How do you make them real?

2. “The difference between self-exaltation and authentic self-promotion is driven by your approach to humility.” Discuss in light of the Luke and Matthew passages – so what does this look like for you?

3. “Your authentic self-promotion is made real by pursuing a turtle-mentality rather than a hare-mentality.” Discuss some ways that your approach to consistency can become material for your sales efforts. What are you doing to capture customer testimonials about the value you deliver and how you deliver that value? How does this honor Christ?
